Alpina is a German maker of high-performance cars developed from BMW models. Burkard Bovensiepen founded the company on 1 January 1965 in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria, and it later settled in nearby Buchloe. Since 1983 the German Federal Ministry of Transport has recognised Alpina as an automobile manufacturer in its own right rather than a tuner. The firm also raced touring cars for many years before it withdrew from motorsport in 1988.
Alpina is known for hand-assembled engines, uprated suspension, upgraded interiors and Switch-Tronic shift buttons on the steering wheel. Notable models include the B10 BiTurbo built from 1989 to 1994, the B3 Biturbo of 2007–2012, the XD3 and XD4 diesel SUVs that debuted in 2018 and the Alpina B7, a fast luxury saloon based on the 7 Series. BMW announced the purchase of the Alpina brand in March 2022, and in 2026 BMW Alpina was launched as an exclusive standalone brand within the BMW Group. See also BMW.
