Which G6 to choose and its rivals

Our verdict · Felix Hartmann

The facelifted Long Range is the most balanced version: 218 kW, rear-wheel drive, 525 km WLTP and 12-minute fast charging, at the same €47,600 in 2025 as before the update. The Standard Range suits buyers who charge mostly at home. The Performance AWD adds traction and pace, with 0–100 km/h in about four seconds, for €4,000 more in the 2025 German list.

The obvious rival is the Tesla Model Y, a coupé-shaped electric SUV of similar size. Other Chinese options in the class include the BYD Sealion 7. For buyers comparing several models, the compare section puts dimensions and specifications side by side.

The XPeng G6 is a mid-size electric coupé-SUV of 4,753 mm, revealed at Auto Shanghai on 18 April 2023 and delivered in China from 29 June 2023. It sits on XPeng's SEPA 2.0 platform with an 800-volt electrical system, and its single- or twin-motor versions range from 185 to 358 kW. In Germany it has been listed since August 2024, and a facelift with faster-charging batteries followed in 2025.

XPeng, formally Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology, was founded on 15 August 2014 in Guangzhou by Xia Heng and He Tao, two former GAC executives; He Xiaopeng is chairman. The company listed in New York in August 2020 and in Hong Kong in July 2021, and Volkswagen bought a 4.99 % stake for US$700 million in July 2023. Deliveries rose from 482 cars in 2018 to 429,445 in 2025. Besides cars, XPeng develops eVTOL aircraft through XPeng AeroHT and a humanoid robot called IRON.

Development and launch

XPeng presented the G6 at Auto Shanghai in April 2023. The car went on sale in China in June 2023, and 44,545 were sold there by the end of that year. The coupé-SUV shape has double-row LED headlights, and the dashboard is almost free of physical buttons, with the climate controls moved into the screen.

Exports followed quickly. Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia received the car in 2024. In Europe XPeng had started with Norway in 2021, added Spain and Portugal in September 2024 and the UK in February 2025. The ADAC catalogue lists German prices for the G6 from August 2024. Local assembly now runs in Indonesia and Malaysia, and Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, also builds the car.

Versions, batteries and performance

Version Battery Power Torque 0–100 km/h WLTP range
Standard Range RWD (2024) 66 kWh LFP 190 kW (258 PS) 440 Nm 6.6 s 435 km
Long Range RWD (2024) 87.5 kWh NMC 210 kW (286 PS) - 6.2 s 570 km
Performance AWD (2024) 87.5 kWh NMC 358 kW (487 PS) 660 Nm 3.9 s -
Long Range RWD (2025 export) 80.8 kWh 218 kW (296 PS) 450 Nm 6.7 s 525 km
Performance AWD (2025 export) 80.8 kWh 358 kW (487 PS) 660 Nm 4.13 s 510 km

The rear motor is a permanent-magnet synchronous unit; the all-wheel-drive version adds a 140 kW, 220 Nm front motor. For the 2024 German cars the ADAC catalogue lists 190, 210 and 350 kW. After the 2025 update it gives 185 kW for the Standard Range, 218 kW for the Long Range and 358 kW for the Performance AWD. Wikipedia EN gives 358 kW for the twin-motor car throughout.

The cells come from CALB. The Standard Range uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, while the larger first-generation pack used nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells. In China the 2025 car also has a 68.5 kWh LFP option with 218 kW and 625 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is more generous than WLTP.

Charging: from 3C to 5C

Charging speed is where the G6 stands out. The first cars were rated at 3C, meaning a 10–80 % charge in about 20 minutes, with DC peaks given as 215 to 451 kW depending on the pack. The 2025 batteries are rated at 5C: 10–80 % takes 12 minutes, or 15.5 minutes at −30 °C, and the peak rises to 382 kW for the 68.5 kWh pack and 451 kW for the 80.8 kWh pack. These times assume a charger that can deliver such power. AC charging runs at 11 kW.

The 2025 facelift

XPeng launched the revised G6 in China on 13–14 March 2025 and said it brought 81 changes. On the outside there is a full-width light bar at the front, new wheels, a fixed ducktail spoiler and darker rear lights. The suspension became softer with longer travel, the steering was retuned, and double glazing plus extra insulation reduce noise.

Inside, the 2023 car's 10.2-inch instrument display and 14.96-inch centre screen gave way to a 10.25-inch display and a 15.6-inch screen running on a Snapdragon 8295P chip. The front seats gained heating, ventilation and massage. The boot grew from 571 to 647 litres, or 1,752 litres with the rear seats folded. According to Wikipedia EN, more than 5,000 non-refundable orders arrived within seven minutes of the announcement.

Driver assistance

The 2023 G6 with the XNGP system carried 31 sensors: two lidars, five radars, 11 cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors, run by two Nvidia Orin X chips. For 2025 XPeng switched Chinese cars to its Turing AI system without lidar, and for 2026 announced its own Turing chip. Which of these functions European cars receive depends on local approval, so buyers should check the specification in their own market.

Safety: Euro NCAP 2024

Euro NCAP tested the G6 Long Range in 2024 and gave it five stars. It scored 88 % for adult occupants, 85 % for children, 81 % for vulnerable road users and 75 % for the safety-assist systems. The safety-assist score is the weakest of the four. ANCAP adopted the test for Australia and New Zealand.
