Mahindra & Mahindra was founded on 2 October 1945 in Ludhiana as a steel trading company, Mahindra & Mohammed, by the brothers Kailash Chandra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. When Ghulam Muhammad moved to Pakistan in 1948, the firm became Mahindra & Mahindra. It began by assembling Willys Jeeps under licence, building the CJ3 from 1954, and grew into one of India's largest SUV makers and, through Mahindra Tractors, the world's largest tractor maker by volume. Mahindra controlled SsangYong from 2011 until its receivership and also owns a majority of the Italian design house Pininfarina.

The Mahindra XUV700 is a mid-size SUV with five or seven seats, built in Chakan, India, since September 2021. It began as the planned second-generation XUV500 and was launched as a separate, larger model. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with 149 kW (203 PS) or a 2.2-litre turbo diesel with up to 136 kW (185 PS), with manual or automatic gearboxes and optional all-wheel drive. In January 2026 the facelift was launched under the new name XUV 7XO.

From XUV500 successor to a separate model

The XUV700 has a direct ancestor. The XUV500, codenamed W201, was launched in 2011 and built in Chakan and Nashik until 2021. It was the first Mahindra built on a monocoque body instead of a separate chassis, and Peter Stevens is credited with its design. Its 2.2-litre mHawk diesel started with about 104 kW (140 hp); the 2018 facelift raised output to about 116 kW (155 hp) and torque from 330 to 360 Nm. Mahindra announced exports of kits for local assembly to markets including Australia, South Africa, Chile, Italy and Spain.

Mahindra first developed its replacement as the second generation of the XUV500. During development it was turned into a separate model, the XUV700, and the XUV500 ended production in 2021. It was introduced in August 2021 and launched in India on 14 August 2021. Production at the Chakan plant in Maharashtra started the following month.

The XUV700 is 4,695 mm long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, and the seven-seat version has a third row. The kerb weight is 2,040 kg. Mahindra exports it to Australia, where the AX7 and AX7L versions with the petrol engine have been sold since June 2023.

Engines and gearboxes

Version Engine Power Torque Gearbox
2.0 petrol mStallion turbo, four-cylinder 149 kW (203 PS) 380 Nm manual or automatic
2.2 diesel, entry versions mHawk turbo, four-cylinder 114 kW (155 PS) 360 Nm manual only
2.2 diesel, higher versions, manual mHawk turbo, four-cylinder 136 kW (185 PS) 420 Nm six-speed manual
2.2 diesel, higher versions, automatic mHawk turbo, four-cylinder 136 kW (185 PS) 450 Nm six-speed automatic

The petrol engine is the more powerful unit, but the stronger diesel delivers up to 70 Nm more torque. An all-wheel-drive version is available. Mahindra's claimed fuel economy on India's ARAI cycle is 15 km/l for the petrol manual and 13 km/l for the petrol automatic, about 6.7 and 7.7 l/100 km. The diesel is rated at 17 km/l with the manual and 16.5 km/l with the automatic, about 5.9 and 6.1 l/100 km. These are Indian test figures and are not comparable with WLTP values.

With 149 kW and 2,040 kg, the petrol XUV700 has about 73 kW per tonne. Our car rankings put that figure in context against other SUVs.

Safety rating

Global NCAP tested the XUV700 in 2021 with two airbags under its older protocol, which is similar to the Latin NCAP rules of 2013. The SUV scored 16.03 of 17 points for adult protection, worth five stars, and 41.66 of 49 points for child protection, worth four stars. In June 2022 it also received Global NCAP's Safer Choice Award. Global NCAP results follow their own protocol and cannot be compared directly with Euro NCAP scores; more crash-test results are collected in our car safety section.

Awards and the XUV 7XO facelift

The XUV700 won both the Autocar Car of the Year and the Indian Car of the Year titles for 2022.

On 5 January 2026 Mahindra launched the facelift and renamed it the XUV 7XO. An electric version, the XEV 9S, was launched in 2025 with a rear-mounted motor and rear-wheel drive. Mahindra's other electric models, the BE 6 and the XEV 9e, were launched on 26 November 2024.

Mahindra, SsangYong and Pininfarina

Mahindra bought a majority stake in the Korean maker SsangYong in 2011. After it stopped funding the company, SsangYong entered receivership in December 2020. It left Mahindra's control formally in November 2022, when a consortium led by KG Group took over. The Korean brand's story is told in our history of SsangYong, and its large SUV in our SsangYong Rexton review.

In December 2015 Mahindra and Tech Mahindra agreed to buy 76.06 % of Pininfarina for €168 million. The founder of the Turin studio is profiled on our page about Battista Pininfarina. In 2025 Mahindra produced 594,000 passenger vehicles.
