Volvo S80 at a glance

The S80 replaced the rear-wheel-drive S90/960 as Volvo's top saloon and was the brand's first front-wheel-drive car in the executive class. It was designed as a "pure saloon", without an estate sister, and was built at Torslanda in Gothenburg. Volvo's wider story is in Volvo's history.

First generation (1998–2006): transverse six and new safety

Production began in August 1998, and the S80 was the first Volvo on the P2 architecture later used by the V70, S60 and XC90. Its most unusual feature was a straight-six mounted across the engine bay. The base engine was the 2.9-litre six with 144–147 kW (196–200 PS), and the T6 used a 2.8-litre twin-turbo six with 200 kW (272 PS). Five-cylinder engines included the 2.4 with 103 kW (140 PS) or 125 kW (170 PS) and the 2.5T with 149–154 kW (203–210 PS). Diesel buyers had the 2.5 TDI, the 2.4D and, from late 2001, the D5 with 120 kW (163 PS).

Volvo introduced the Inflatable Curtain side airbag and the WHIPS whiplash protection seats on this car. Euro NCAP's test of a 2000 car gave it 29 points for adult protection, a four-star result under the protocol of the time, and two stars for pedestrians. All-wheel drive arrived on the 2.5T, and the length grew from 4,822 mm to 4,849 mm with the 2004 update.

Second generation (2006–2016): V8, T6 and Drive-E

The second S80 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 28 February 2006 and went on sale in June 2006. It used the P3 platform, developed with Ford and shared with the Mondeo and S-Max. The headline engine was the Yamaha-built 4.4-litre V8 from the XC90 with 232 kW (315 PS) and all-wheel drive.

According to the old 1cars data, the 2014 T5 reaches 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and 230 km/h, with 6.2 l/100 km combined. The D4 takes 8.4 seconds, reaches 225 km/h and uses about 4.3 l/100 km. The T6 AWD needs about 6.4 seconds. Compared with the 3.2 six it replaced, the Drive-E T5 has 5 kW more and two fewer cylinders.

Facelifts, cabin and practicality

The second generation was updated for 2009–2010, again for 2013 and finally in 2014. The last update, shown in Geneva in 2013 for the 2014 model year, brought a wider grille, new lights, the Sensus Connected Touch infotainment option and an 8-inch digital instrument display with Elegance, Eco and Performance themes. The old text lists four trims, Kinetic, Momentum, Summum and Executive, the last with front-seat massage and a rear armrest.

Safety technology

Safety was the S80's calling card. The second generation offered Blind Spot Information (BLIS), adaptive cruise control with collision warning and, from 2012, the City Safety low-speed automatic braking system as standard. In the USA it was an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2007. The old 1cars text describes dual-chamber SIPS side airbags, whose lower hip chamber runs at about five times the pressure of the chest chamber. It also mentions front crumple zones built from several grades of high-strength steel and an energy-absorbing bonnet and bumper for pedestrians.

Reliability and common problems

US data compiled in November 2025 shows the most complaints for the early first-generation years 1999–2002, with the 2000 model year singled out for engine stalling and speed-control faults. By 2005–2006 most early issues had been addressed. In the second generation, 2011 and especially 2014 drew the fewest complaints and recalls. Reviewers criticise high fuel use of the big petrol engines and a weak base engine in some markets.
