Chevrolet Comaro is a strong, fast car that has an original appearance and a very attractive interior. This car is in the honor of many fans of beautiful cars. But the production of the legendary car 4 families stopped in 2002. Seven long years were waiting for fans of Chevrolet Camaro to return to the production of sports coupe.

Generation I (1966-1969)
Chevrolet Camaro first showed himself in 1966, and it was designed to fight no less interesting Ford Mustang. The latter formed a new class of vehicles in 1964 and gave birth to the culture of “Pony Car”. “Pony Carys” are compact rear-drive two-door coupe, which have a sporting character and acceptable value. Although it should be noted that the cars produced by Ford are not the founders of the Pony Car class in all respects, as similar vehicles were created by Chevrolet and Plymouth a little earlier.
But only a beautiful and powerful car with a stallion on the grille was able to make an unusual public response with the help of its temperament, style, ideology. Quite quickly, the coupe became a hit, which already in 1.5 years of trade overcame the bar of 1 000 000 sold cars. The American company did not observe how their competitor continues to build up an amazing success.
For this purpose, an important goal was set – in the mid-1960s to develop a vehicle that can confidently compete for market share. Therefore, in August 1966, in the state of Ohio (Norwood) the world was presented the debut serial production of Camaro, which became the founder of the popular family of machines. There is a very fair saying when competition leads to progress.
It can be applied to the Camaro car, which the American company General Motors designed to “pursue” its worst competitor – Concern Ford. Wheelbase was 2,743 mm, and the height of the road clearance – from 124 to 130 millimeters. The curb weight of the car was from 1,320 to 1,538 kg.
The basis for the 1st generation of the car was the “trolley” with rear drive “F-body”, which received such a bodywork scheme: the central and aft areas – a common load-bearing structure, the bow – a strong sub-frame. There was an independent suspension and short transverse levers in front of the truck, and the rear one was suspended using longitudinally mounted springs.
All versions of the powerful car were equipped with a steering mechanism of the type “screw – ball nut”, but the hydraulic power steering was not installed on all equipment. The braking system implied the use of drum brakes on all wheels. As a separate option, disc brakes were mounted on the front wheels. The most affordable model was the Chevrolet Camaro, which had a 3.8-liter 140 hp engine with 6 cylinders under the hood.
The cylinders were arranged in a row, and the torque from the engine to the wheels was transmitted by a 3-speed “mechanics”. However, the model with such “naked” equipment did not cause a general sensation, while at that time there was a great demand for packages RallySport and SuperSport. Modification of RS implied some changes in appearance.
Another variant of the front end’s appearance, where the headlights were hidden behind the grille, was immediately striking. The SS was equipped with a large V-shaped 6.5-liter eight-cylinder engine, which developed 325 horsepower (after a while, the engine received 350 and 375 “horses”).
It may seem unusual, but a couple of these packages could be combined in one machine, which received the name, surprisingly enough, RS/SS. Another important model was the Z28 version, which used a sports suspension, corrected the exhaust system, put branded strips on the hood and installed an 8-cylinder five-liter unit, which developed 290 horsepower.
Many drivers believed that its performance was underestimated, and in reality the power of such a unit was greater. The Z28 was equipped with only a manual transmission, while other versions were available with an automatic 2-speed transmission. The most top-of-the-range version was the fried Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which produced a total of 430 horsepower. These cars often took part in races at 1⁄4 miles.
Among other things, the cars were equipped with 8 engines with a capacity of 3.8, 4.1, 4.9, 5.0, 5.4, 5.7, 6.5 and 7.0 litres. With such a wide range of engines, General Motors sought to meet the needs of many sectors of society. After all, there were people who demanded the strongest engines and loved fast ride, and there were people who needed a convertible for a rather measured ride.
The first update of the high-speed model received in 1969. The technical part was decided not to touch, but only added a new 3-speed automatic box. The design staff changed the body shape, which gave the coupe a more powerful look and sporting qualities. In addition, the headlights became more aggressive and they were placed deeper.
The design of the grille was changed – it got a heavier V-shaped canvas of chrome. The plant produced the coupe body and convertible until 1969 at 2 enterprises in the United States of America. In addition, cars were assembled in countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, Peru, the Philippines and Venezuela. A total of about 700,000 Ford Mustang “rivals” were manufactured, followed by the Chevrolet Camaro 2 families.
Generation II (1970-1981)
The fight was not lost, so since 1970 in the race for “leadership” with Mustang entered the updated version on the same platform. If the first family of Chevrolet employees assembled in a hurry, then the 2nd generation made a smart and with the arrangement, therefore, the coupe was more attractive than its predecessor, and the platform – more reliable.
After a while, they stopped producing versions with an open top. When 1975 came, the catalogues could not find a modification of the Z28, which had a real animal under the hood, which developed 360 “horses” and accelerated to a mark of 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds.
Only a two-door coupe was produced. The height of the ground clearance depended on a certain modification and ranged from 107 to 127 mm, and the wheelbase was fixed at 2,743 millimeters. The curb weight of the American car was from 1,436 to 1,690 kilograms.
A very important victory was that 7 years later (in 1977) the second generation of Camaro was able to outperform its direct competitor in sales. Rear-drive versions were supplied with in-line six-cylinder engines with a volume of 3.8 and 4.7 liters, a V-shaped 6-cylinder unit with a volume of 3.8 liters and 8-cylinder units with a volume of 5.0, 5.7, 6.5 and 6.6 liters.
The synchronization between the engine and wheels was performed by a four-speed or three-speed “mechanics” and a three-speed or two-speed “automatic”. The second generation was built on the improved 1st generation base under the name “F-body”. The bodywork has undergone some changes.
The doors were made wider, and they had different handles. The roof was changed, and the bumper in front and the radiator grille (which also received a new square shape) were not the same as the previous family.
The changes also affected the interior design. Now there is room for more comfortable driver and front passenger seats, the exterior of the dashboard has changed, as well as the materials of interior elements have become better (vinyl).
Later, the standard 3.8 litre engine and 2-speed automatic transmission were no longer produced. When 1974 came, the car was upgraded. Body dimensions became larger. Partly, this was due to the new bumpers that were installed, which turned out to be safer.
They met the requirements of American legislation of those times. The central part of the grille was removed from the emblem of the Camaro and moved to the upper area. They changed the shape of the headlamps (which were now more massive and were divided into near and far illumination) and rear optics (if before it was round, now it had a rectangular shape).
The next facelift of yellow Camaro survived in 1978. At that time, the company’s management decided to replace both bumpers, change the shape of the grille, and slightly change the shape of the front lighting and rear optics.
The technical area was also slightly changed by the removal of the “old” 4.1-liter engine and the installation of an improved 3.8-liter unit instead. During the entire production of the second family it was released in circulation of about 2 000 000.
Generation III (1982-1992)
The production of the 3rd generation of Chevrolet Camaro began in January 1982. The basic principle of the new car was economy. Due to the fact that during the 1970s, insurance companies raised the cost of services for powerful vehicles, and after the oil crisis, all car factories began to underestimate the construction of their own models.
It turns out that the most powerful version of the Camaro did not reach the mark of 200 hp, and as a base engine was a 90 hp unit. In addition to increasing fuel economy, the coupe was distinguished by a pleasant new look and good equipment. In addition, the open version was returned to the model list. The curb weight was from 1 400 to 1 525 kg.
According to the existing traditions, the car was built, as well as the previous model, on the “cart” “F”. But in comparison with the previous range, the wheelbase was reduced to 2,565 mm. The design style of the exterior and interior has changed fundamentally.
There was no radiator grille anymore – the radiator covered the blind shield, on which sides were made rectangular embrasures for headlights similar in shape. The corresponding inscription “Camaro”, installed on the protective grille of the front bumper air intake, resembled a car in front of a man. In the same air intake, engineers placed front foggers.
The IROC-Z version, which approached the sports coupe to its powerful predecessors, was a novelty of 1990 and pleasantly pleased the drivers who like fast driving. The powerplant has received 230 “horses”, thanks to which acceleration of the car up to the first hundred took 5.8 seconds.
The third family of Chevrolet Camaro had an atmospheric 2.5-liter Iron Duke engine with four cylinders and developed 110 “mare”, as well as V-shaped 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines, the minimum volume of which was 2.8 liters, and the maximum – 5.7 liters.
The outdated 3-speed automatic transmission and 4-speed manual transmission were replaced by more clearly functioning 5-speed manual transmissions and 4-range automatic transmissions. An independent two-lever suspension in front and a dependent suspension on multi-layer leaf springs in the rear were used.
If you look at the structural part, the machine has not changed so radically: there was a powerful front sub-frame, connected to the load-bearing scheme, which forms the central and stern parts. The base model had a hydraulic power steering, which was already a familiar option at that time.
If there were disc brakes in the front, the rear wheels received standard drums. Until the update in 1991, the exterior and interior of the Chevrolet Camaro 3 did not change much.
However, after 1991, the car received changes, which over time were used in the 4th family of the popular brand. The car has grown in size, but the body width has become smaller by 10 millimeters. General Motors engineering group spent a lot of time on modernization of the bodywork and its anti-corrosion properties.
Generation IV (1993-2002)
Since 1993, they have been selling the 4th family cars, the production of which was organized at a Canadian enterprise in the province of Quebec. The new body was pleasant to look at, comfortable, and received a lot of equipment. Importantly, they returned the engines that they loved so much for their power.
Among the lists of engines was a V-shaped atmospheric six-cylinder engine with a volume of 3.4 liters (162 hp) and 3.8 liters (200 hp). In addition, there was a V-shaped 8-cylinder 5.7-liter unit under the hood, which developed from 162 to 305 “horses”. They worked together with the already known 4-speed box on the “machine” and 5-speed “mechanics”.
A year later, the Chevrolet Camaro 4 was equipped with a 6-speed mechanical box. Special attention was paid to a couple of limited versions – for the 30th anniversary of the brand in 1997, a 330-horsepower version was released, and after 5 years, a 345-horsepower version. Weight of the fourth generation is from 1,594 to 1,651 kilograms.
When Camaro began to emerge from her difficulties and began her life “from scratch”, she took another blow. As the mid-1990s went on, GM decided to grow vigorously and produce other brands such as Geo and Saturn. This led to the fact that the management did not look after their own financial situation, so by 2002 the company was a step away from bankruptcy.
This has prompted the corporation to stop producing many cars, which can be attributed to Chevrolet Camaro. The appearance has changed significantly. Now there were no sharp corners, the car was streamlined and looked like a nuclear warhead. The installed bumpers were rounded off.
Also, the shape of the rear optics and side mirrors were rounded. The size of the compartment has also grown. When the year 1998 began, the car has been updated – the front bumper, radiator grille and headlights were updated.
The salon was also upgraded, now it had a new “board” of instruments, chairs, materials of decoration and upholstery of chairs, audio system and climatic settings. Each wheel was equipped with disc brakes and an anti-lock system.
Generation V (2009-2015)
The novelty was first shown in Detroit at the International Motor Show in early 2006. The penultimate family of American cars went on sale in 2009. The model was in the back of the coupe and convertible, and was produced at the Canadian company until 2015. The sports car officially “arrived” at the Russian market only in 2012.
For Russians there were such engines: V-shaped 3.6-liter “six”, developing 328 “horses”, and V-shaped 6.2-liter “eight”, giving out already 405 horsepower. Synchronized the work of such powerful engines with a 6-speed “automatic”.
The changed car was built on the new Zeta base. The exterior of the sports hall was developed by a Chinese specialist Sanhigp Li. Exterior visited the first generation of the car, which received a front grille with a sharp shape and shark “teeth”. In addition, the novelty had powerful athletic body shapes and aggressive head optics.
The central part is decorated with an expressive hood, backed by an evil glance of the headlight, two “muzzles” of the exhaust system and beautiful 20 inch rollers. The curb weight of the new truck was from 1,687 to 1,770 kg. The clearance height is 118-122 mm. The Convertible version turned out to be a little bit more massive, and the clearance became 3 millimeters lower.
Both machines were equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The lowest cost was $31680.80. Standard equipment includes ABS system, ESP, six airbags, cast wheels, fog lights, tire pressure sensors, cruise control, electrically powered front seats and premium audio system.
By 2012, in New York City, an updated version of the car was shown, which in addition to a fresher exterior, received an innovative equipment and a wide range of choice of body paint. Next year in Frankfurt a restyled convertible was shown, which improved in the same way as the two-door coupe.
The appearance of the Chevrolet Camaro’s “five” strikingly combines its own features of the legendary machine, which was produced 40 years ago, and today’s style of modern sporting qualities that are inherent in the “oil car”. The model contains aggressiveness, predatory and muscularity.
Its spectacular appearance is supported by a non-standard form of rear wings, which turned out to be chopped off, and LED lighting system. If you take the stylistics of the fifth Chevrolet, you immediately realize that the automobile company decided to follow the first generation, not to copy the “siltiness” of the 4th and 3rd generation.
The elongated hood and radiator grille with large honeycomb cells, which have a rectangular shape, the look of a real predator, which can be noticed by paying attention to the headlights, and wide rims of the wheels testify to this.
The side posts, which were mounted in the middle, were made to increase body stiffness, but they are almost invisible. This creates the illusion of a rigid folding roof. As a separate option, a glass roof can be ordered, which will be electrically driven.
However, for this option you will have to pay about 50,000 rubles. And thanks to the fact that the car was used in the world-famous film Transformers, Chevrolet Camaro was able to increase the demand for itself, and not only in America, but around the world.
Frankly speaking, the interior of the 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro has a Spartan look of the salon. The steering wheel itself has a leather trim. If you take the variant with an automatic gearbox, the gearshift paddles were mounted on the steering wheel and rotate with it, which makes it easier to change gears when turning.
Paying attention to the central console, it is possible to notice that there are space notes in it, and the real decoration of it is the block of settings of the conditioner, looking rather stylishly (the climate control is absent even optionally).
Among the advantages of more expensive modifications are the availability of auxiliary devices, which are designed to show important information. Only a small monochrome screen is provided on the central console.
The presence of active head restraints and the heating function for the front seats are also good news. The rear row can be folded together. If the front seat is more than comfortable, only children or small adults can sit in the back seats. The reason for this is the limited space available in length and height.
By the way, the designers have provided special fasteners for Isofix child seats for children. The loudspeaker system has a power of 245 W with an amplifier, and also supports AM/FM/CD/MP3/AUX/USB and Bluetooth.
Also inside the American car you can find cruise control, air conditioning, installed rear chamber and sensors in the wheels. The American luggage compartment is not a record-breaking one, which, in principle, is not as important as it is for cargo transportation, there are station wagons, crossovers and trucks, after all.
Inside the Chevrolet Camaro of the fifth generation, they also decided to follow the retro style, but they did everything with the use of modern materials and technologies. First of all, it affected the driver’s seat. The instrument panel of the 5th generation was divided into 3 separate areas: speedometer on the left, display of the on-board computer in the center and engine speed sensor in the right part.
Interestingly, the designers decided to decorate the central console in retro style. The upper area was occupied by the audio and climate system, and below there were 4 devices that showed the temperature of the power unit, how much fuel and so on remained. There is hard and inexpensive plastic everywhere.
The armchairs were made of good-quality leather. The multifunctional steering wheel borrowed from “Cruz” and colored screen of MyLink multimedia system pleasantly pleased. Though the seats in “American” are comfortable and dense, they do not have good lateral support.
V Generation Specifications
The machine is equipped with two types of engines: 405 hp. (6.2 liters) and 328 hp. (3.6 liters). Acceleration to a hundred kilometres is 4.7 and 6.2 seconds, respectively. The powertrain is complemented by a 6-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, which also features manual gearshift.
It is worth noting the amazing economy of the junior engine, which consumes only 8.1 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers. For an engine of this size, this is very little. Maximum speed of the model is 250 km/h.
The vehicle is equipped with independent suspension of all four wheels, which provides excellent stability on the road, and the steering is designed so that its sensitivity depends on the speed of the car and the way the driver is driving.
The 3.6-litre V-gear has a 24-valve direct-injection gas distribution system. A 6.2-liter V-shaped power unit has eight cylinders and an aluminum cylinder block, as well as phase reflectors at the inlet.
Moreover, the engine is equipped with Eaton technology, which is able to switch off some of the cylinders at low load. If you follow the recommendations, the engine should be injected with at least 95-th gasoline because the degree of compression is not small – 11.5.
The version with a convertible is accelerated for a longer time, more than 1 second, but it is not so important, because this model is not available in the automotive market of the Russian Federation.

Steering wheel control

The wheelbase of the powerful monster is 2 852 mm, and the level of ground clearance is stacked in the value of 118-122 mm. This clearance allows you to feel confident at high speeds and corners. Interestingly, the “open” version of the Convertible is slightly larger: by 5 mm in length and 12 mm in height, and the ground clearance level is reduced by 3 mm.
Not only the driver, but also the passengers and children sitting next to him are responsible for the safety of six airbags, including the front, side and curtains.
There are also chauffeur and front passenger belt pretensioners, the StabiliTrak Dynamic StabiliTrak system, equipped with accelerometers and stability sensors, all of which help Camaro to be confident on the road despite the difficult road conditions.
Chevrolet was able to get a total of five stars in the crash tests. Front and side collision protection was rated at 5 stars. This is no coincidence, as the Camaro has been equipped with two-stage airbags for driver and passenger sitting next to it, chest cushions, side and auxiliary side airbags.
All the cushions are equipped with a suppression system after the opening. The body structure of the Chevrolet Camaro has been fitted with stability posts for extra strength.
Renewed Chevrolet Camaro 2014
The presentation of the updated Chevrolet Camaro 2014 merchant version was held at the 2013 US Motor Show. This restyling was the most serious for the fifth generation, which started in 2009. On the outside, Chevrolet Camaro got a different design of the front end with a narrower radiator grille, so the car began to squint more angrily.
Also, the air intake in the bumper was increased, and special holes were made for fog lights. A new spoiler was installed on the rear part of the truck, which now will not be delivered for standard equipment.
The new rear lighting, which has now received an LED system and is carried out in style already accustomed to all Camaro cars, was a pleasant surprise. Moreover, the rear part of the updated American coupe can be distinguished by another bumper with a large diffuser and other exhaust pipes.
On the SS model the hood has been redesigned, placing a grille for the powertrain cooling system in it. Previously, a single slot was installed there. Inside the restyled model, nothing has changed, except for the appearance of auxiliary variations of the design and sports seats Recaro for SS.
In spring, the US firm demonstrated the 6th generation of Chevrolet Camaro to the attendees at the Detroit event. The model retained its recognizable elements, but became more technologically advanced by moving to a new platform. This helped to reduce the weight by 100 kg.
The construction is being carried out by GM’s Michigan company. The new product reached Russian customers in 2016. The new generation was designed on the Alpha platform, but more than 70 percent of all elements were made specifically for the new generation.
Judging by the appearance of the “six” the company continued to develop the “history” of the previous model, but made the car more modern and expressive. Large rear hips, special plastic bumpers and “muscles” pumped all over the car created a strong and stocky look, which cannot be confused with any other sports car. In the end, the designers decided to finish the beautiful look by installing fashionable lanterns and attractive 18 or 20 inch rollers. The appearance option directly depends on the level of execution. In the standard equipment of the “American” there are LED “chains” of running lights on the front bumper, installed vertically, as well as a pair of nozzles exhaust system.
However, the “top SS” received a more “threatening” front end, with LED lighting of horizontal shape and ventilation slots on the hood. The rear part has four “trunks”, which are responsible for exhaust emissions and a modest spoiler on the luggage compartment.
The design team was tasked with designing a lightweight Camaro that could preserve the recognizable lines of the previous model. As a result, the body length was shorter, but the width of the body was increased, giving it a sporty appearance. These proportions improved the braking performance of the sports coupe and had a positive effect on its handling and maneuverability. The Chevrolet Camaro 2017’s long tests have resulted in a modern vehicle with reduced aerodynamic drag coefficient, alterative appearance and verified smooth curves of the exterior.
The salon of the American coupe has saved a small continuity with the last generation, but has found appreciably modernized arrangement. Unusually look 4 air deflector nozzles, which are very similar to the Mercedes deflectors. In addition, the central pair of deflectors was planted at the level of gear lever.
The steering wheel in the sports style was truncated at the bottom and has control elements, and looks more appropriate inside the car than the “sheep” from the “Cruz” of the 5th family. In the basic equipment sculptural “canopy” hides the mechanical instrument panel, but as a separate option you can install a high definition screen with a diagonal of 8 inches.
The display of such a diagonal display adorns the central console, but it also controls the multimedia system Mylink, supporting the touch input. Very unusually, the engineers have arranged for the temperature and fan speed to be adjusted – this is the responsibility of the round regulators around the ventilation system deflectors.
Thanks to this, the development department has successfully eliminated a few unnecessary buttons. The central tunnel received the electromechanical handbrake key and the magic switch Drive Mode Selector, which allows you to change the mode of operation of 8 control parameters of the new Camaro 6.
Unlike the chosen algorithm (Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport or Track for the SS model), it is possible to get various characteristics of the automatic transmission and steering, adjustable suspension and engine response. In addition, it is possible to choose and customize the LED background lighting of the cabin, which has received 24 shades.
Along with the new generation the quality of finishing materials has increased. The coupe has good plastic, fabric or leather upholstery armchairs, metal inserts. The sports car was equipped with front seats with pronounced rollers on the sides.
The sofa in the back can still be comfortably placed only for children or short sitters. When designing any modernized Chevrolet Camaro 2017 cabin of the 6th generation, the creators were thinking about only one thing – how to increase the level of comfort of the driver. That’s why everyone in the car made it so that the owner could enjoy every minute of driving an “American”.
The above mentioned steering wheel got the function of heating, which will be very useful for our country. The dashboard can display up to 22 readings, which makes it easy to operate the vehicle. The central console has two cup holders and a spacious storage compartment to keep things safe.
The coupe received a range of 3 gasoline engines (the standard engine was the most interesting). The “base” is considered to be a 4-cylinder turbocharged Ecotec engine with a volume of 2.0 liters.
Such a unit develops 275 “horses” (on the Russian market it is declared as 238 hp). The first hundred is achieved in 5.9 seconds, and to overcome every 100 kilometers while driving in the country it will take about 7-8 liters of fuel.
The medium variant is a V-shaped 3.5-liter six-cylinder atmospheric engine, supplied with direct injection and variable phase technology, as well as an option to switch off two cylinders during low loads. All this makes it possible to achieve 335 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 385 Nm of thrust limit.
The top model is the 6.2-litre V8-cylinder LT1. It has a direct gasoline supply to the combustion chamber. The powerful engine releases 455 horsepower at 6,000 rpm.
For each of the power units there is a 6-speed manual transmission or an eight-range Hydra-Matic “automatic” (8L45 for the version with 2.0 l, 8L90 for the version with 3.6 and 6.2 l).
The front mounted suspension has a multilever aluminium McPherson scheme. The designers also installed a double swivel fist. The rear part has a steel five-lever suspension.
